Sealing systems are function-critical components of fluid technology devices and systems. Their advanced level of technical development is the result of years of development and practical experience in a wide range of mechanical engineering sectors.

The applications for hydraulic sealing systems range from uses in construction equipment that needs to function under the harshest conditions where pressure, temperature and medium are concerned, to industrial water hydraulics in pressure transmitters with extreme requirements with regard to lubrication, wear and corrosion.

The scraper ring profile A1 serves to prevent the ingress of dust, dirt, grains of sand and metal filings. This is achieved through its special shape. This allows it to prevent the formation of grooves to a large extent, protect the guide components and extend the service life of the seals. An excess in the diameter of the seal ensures that it is seated firmly in the groove, thereby preventing the ingress of foreign bodies and moisture via the external diameter of the scraper.

The scraper ring profile A1 creates a technically perfect seal on the cylinder. No special threaded rings and fastening plates are necessary for the installation. It does not require any tight fits or metal inserts. This means that any corrosion that may arise between the metal cage and cylinder head due to the use of scrapers with a metal frame is avoided. No fine fit is required for the groove.

The scraper is held in place securely with a press fit of the metallic sheath against the external groove diameter in the axially open installation space. Because the scraper lip forms a perfect seal with the cylinder head, it is protected from external mechanical damage to the greatest possible extent.

The Ultrathan® scraper profile AG serves to prevent the ingress of dust, dirt, sand and metal filings into the pivoting lugs of the hydraulic cylinder. This reduces the risk of the material of the swiveling bolts being "eaten away" by dirt entering from the outside. An optimal scraping action is achieved through the special design of the scraper lip. Furthermore, during lubrication, the scraper lip opens up and allows excess grease to escape.

The proven and tested PU material P5008 stands for abrasion resistance, a low degree of residual distortion and insensitivity to external mechanical influences. The scraper is held in place securely with a press fit of the metallic sheath against the external groove diameter in the axially open installation space. Because the scraper lip forms a perfect seal with the swiveling lug, it is protected from external mechanical damage to the greatest possible extent.

The Ultrathan® double scraper ring profile AY serves to prevent the ingress of dust, dirt, grains of sand and metal filings. This is achieved through its special shape. In addition, the sealing lip reduces the residual oil film on the side with the medium.

The double scraper ring profile AY seals off the rod in the direction of the cylinder and requires no special threaded rings or fastening plates for installation. It does not require any tight fits or metal inserts. The scraper is provided as a closed ring and can be pressed into the groove easily. The use of polyurethane ensures excellent dry running characteristics, a high resistance to wear, and — due to a high resistance to ozone and weather-related radiation — a long service life.

The rod seal profile C1 complies with the requirements of manufacturers of hydraulic and pneumatic devices for seals that require the smallest possible installation space. Outstanding sealing properties are achieved with the smallest possible profile width and height.

Extremely low friction thanks to minimal contact with sealing surface. Support rings or brackets are not required due to the special design. It can also be used in pneumatic devices with lubricated compressed air. We would be happy to provide custom installation advice upon request.

For installation in oil-free pneumatic systems (dry air), we recommend our profile E5, which fits into the same installation space.

The Ultrathan® rod seal profile BS is a lipped ring with a tight fit along its external diameter and a secondary sealing lip. Thanks to this additional lip, a generous lubricating film is provided under the seal. This prevents dry running and increased wear to a great extent, thereby allowing for a longer service life. In the past, under certain operating conditions, a passable seal could only be achieved with two consecutively placed seals. In many cases, this expensive tandem placement can be replaced with the rod seal BS.

For telescopic cylinders, we recommend the version with a 4 mm profile width.

The single-acting rod seal kit profile OD consists of a PTFE rod sealing ring and an elastomer O-ring as a preloading element. The asymmetric cross-section of the sealing ring has been designed for the optimal circulation of trailing lubricant during the stroke in both directions. An optimal seal is achieved by installing it in a tandem arrangement in combination with a double scraper ring.

Profile OD is particularly suited to piston rods in master cylinders, server-driven systems, machine tools and rapid closure cylinders. The seal kit has also been implemented successfully in the automobile industry (e.g. in shock absorbers) and the process manufacturing industry.

The Ultrathan® rod seal profile BD is a subsequent development of the Parker seal Park-O-Pak®, with a secondary sealing lip and a highly extrusion-resistant support ring. Thanks to this additional lip, a generous lubricating film is provided in the sealing gap. This prevents dry running and increased wear to a great extent, thereby allowing for a longer service life. Furthermore, in certain cases this second sealing lip can replace a cost-intensive tandem arrangement, in which under certain conditions a passable seal could only be achieved with the use of two consecutively placed seals in separate installation spaces.

This seal is used when the physical characteristics of normal or fabric-reinforced elastomers are no longer sufficient.

The Ultrathan® rod seal profile BU is a compact seal with an integrated anti-extrusion ring. A typical application scenario for this sealing profile would be as a buffer seal in a seal system, such as the ones found in e.g. construction machinery cylinders. These cylinders operate under extreme conditions, during which peak pressures of up to 1000 bar are not uncommon. The Ultrathan® rod seal profile BU is employed in order to protect the secondary seal from being exposed to these stresses. Thanks to its special design, the seal is able to return a pressure buildup that may occur between the primary and secondary seals to the system (much like a check valve). A single or tandem arrangement of this seal profile is also possible.

Ultrathan® O-rings are made of a polyurethane material (Thermoplast) developed by Parker, which possesses an excellent compression set. A polyurethane O-ring is more extrusion-resistant than standard O-rings, which makes its use advantageous in situations where extremely high and/or intermittent pressures may occur, or where there is no space for an anti-extrusion ring.

Extremely positive experiences have been recorded during use in e.g. pneumatic valves for pre- and main control piston seals or as a piston seal in short-stroke centering actuators or clamping cylinders, and in valves of systems that are operated with an HFA fluid with poor lubricating properties. In these cases, for control purposes polyurethane O-rings are used to overrun bore holes for which O-rings made of rubber elastomers would achieve a much shorter service life as a consequence of high wear due to jet erosion.

In many cases, standard O-rings cannot be used due to the boundary conditions, such as high pressures and the flange's unsuitable surface properties. Hence, the Ultrathan® flange seal profile OV was developed specifically for SAE flanges.

The excellent compression set value of the polyurethane material P5008 guarantees the dimensional stability of the seal across a wide temperature range. Furthermore, its high extrusion resistance prevents gap migration, even when the flange "breathes" under pressure. Its high wear resistance requires less time and effort for surface treament than is usually necessary. Through its tight fit, the design of the flange seal profile OV avoids the need for frequent "pumping", which is usually necessary for O-rings.

The rotor seal kit profile KA consists of a fabric-reinforced rubber ring and two anti-extrusion rings. These increase stability and prevent extrusion into the gap, which, because it is determined by the rotary motion (eccentricity), is in most cases variable.

Due to the special design of the dynamic seal surface, a "lubricating deposit" is created, which maintains the liquid film, thereby preventing dry running.

Manufacturers of swiveling bushings often request that the seal design be simplified. This can be done with the use of internally-sealing OR rotor seal kits.
The seal kit OR consists of a low-wearing sliding ring characterized by its low friction, and an elastomer O-ring as a preloading element.

It is especially suited to the two-way sealing of swivel bushings for rotating assemblies, pivot drives, hose reels and for applications in machine tool hydraulics. If the seal kit is used as a final seal, it is recommended that the construction be closed off with a scraper ring.

In order to meet the demands of the special operating conditions of swiveling bushings, the rotor seal kits OR are equipped with one or two circumferential lubrication grooves.

The OQ rotary sealing set consists of a wear-resistant, low-friction PTFE slipper sealing ring and an elastomer o-ring as a preloading element.

It is suitable mainly for applications where the pressure alternates from one side of the seal to the other, such as pivots for rotating track rings, swivel joints, hose reels, and in machine tool hydraulics. If the sealing set is used as an end seal, it is recommended to install a scraper ring at the end of the components.

Based on friction conditions during rotating movements in the application, the sealing set profile OR should generally be preferred. Only if housing limitations are given should the profile OQ be considered.

Depending on the special working conditions, the rotary sealing set OR is equipped with one or two circumferential lubricating grooves.

The rotor seal set profile RS consists of a particularly thermostable, high-strength Thermoplast sliding ring and an elastomer preloading element. Thanks to the special sliding surface geometry on the internal diameter of the sliding ring with the patented (EP 0 643 243 B2) alternating incline, the lubrication of the seal is significantly facilitated. This positively influences both the fiction behavior and wear.

The preloading element, which is responsible for the static sealing function, has a rectangular cross-section. This has advantages over an O-ring with regard to contact tension (leak tightness) and deformation behavior (pumping in installation space).

The dynamic internally-sealing design is to be preferred. We do not recommend a dynamic externally-sealing arrangement.

The Ultrathan® seal kit profile KS was developed specially for sealing separating pistons in piston accumulators. The seal kit consists of two groove rings with different designs and made of different materials. Thanks to its design, it is exceptionally suited to separating different hydraulic media (e.g. oil/gas) reliably and with little friction.

Other areas of application include industrial shock absorbers and hydropneumatic elements such as feed/braking units, pressure transformers, pressure transmitters, and power cylinders.
